I received a call from a Good
Samaritan who found a young female Shar-Pei sitting at the intersection at the
end of their street. They noticed she was sitting in one position for a long
time and not moving (like the RCA dog statue as he described to me). When they
approached her, she didn’t look at them, she didn’t move at all and they thought
she was possibly in some sort of coma. They could get no response from her
whatsoever. Upon further examination, they discovered that she had a wide
collar cinched very tight around her neck. The began trying to unbuckle the
collar but discovered that the end of the collar was stuck and it would not
allow them to unbuckle the collar. One of them ran to the house for something
to cut the collar off, all the time, she didn’t move her head to look at them or
see what they were trying to do to her or even flinch. The collar was so tight
on her neck they were barely able to get something underneath it to cut it off.
When they did, after a few minutes, she became animated and started slowly
moving around. It didn’t appear she had grown into the collar as the collar was
not grown into the neck, there were no open wounds or even hair missing where
the collar had been. We soon realized, as disturbing as it was, the collar had
been intentionally cinched tightly around her neck. There was no way she could
have eaten or even drank water with the collar cinched so tightly around her
neck. She was probably near complete strangulation when they found her. As she
began to move around, they noticed that her hip was moving like that of a
jointed doll that was pulled out of place.
I was talking with the Good Samaritans through much of this as it was playing
out and put out a plea to our volunteers to pick up the dog we now call Amber
and get her to our vet for immediate treatment. Thanks to one of our great
volunteers, Amber was soon on her way to the vet where they found the collar
that had been cinched around her neck had also been glued on the end so that the
collar could not be unbuckled or pulled over her head. I’m not sure what
substance they used but we could not pull it apart with any amount of force.
They measured the collar where it was buckled around her neck at just 16”. In
measuring her neck, she should have had at least a 20” opening. After X-ray’s,
it was discovered that she had a dislocated hip. There were no other fractures
and no superficial wounds like one would see from being hit by a car so it’s
unknown what caused her injury. She was also covered in fleas, had hookworms,
and her entropion is so bad, you can barely see her globes.
We’re not sure what this sweet young dog has endured, but we know it was
horribly bad. Having just this past week taken in Phoebe, the young Shar-Pei
that had been hit by a car and left untreated in her owners yard, we were
concerned about our financial ability to provide the care she needed. Thanks to
your donations for Phoebe’s initial care, and the generosity of our vets who
donate so much of their services, we were able to take Amber for hip surgery
yesterday and she’s resting in her foster home tonight. We will take things one
at a time and will continue to medicate her eyes until we can have her entropion
surgery performed. She’s such a sweet young dog and just leans into you when
you touch her, taking it all in. She will soon make someone a wonderful
companion.
I just wanted to share with you the difference you can make and have made
because of your donations and support. Having two beautiful Shar-Pei needing
such extensive medical care can be devastating for a rescue. At such a young
age (@ 1 yr), it’s so wonderful to be able to give them the care they need and a
chance at a better life. We could never do it without you.

PHOEBE UPDATE
Look how
great little Phoebe is doing! She's healing well since the surgery to repair her
fractured leg and hip and will be ready for her forever home soon!!! Thanks for
everyone's help in getting her the care she needed. She's really such a
wonderful little girl and we are so happy to see her getting better every day.

How could
anyone leave this precious puppy injured and unable to stand in their own
backyard. Thanks to some caring neighbors, animal control was called and Phoebe
soon found herself in the arms of a caring NASPR volunteer who rushed her to the
vet to receive the care she needed for her little broken body. After exam, it
was found that she had been living with her injuries without pain medication or
treatment, for 5-7 days. Phoebe, who is only 4-5 months old, had a fractured
left femur and a right luxated sacrum joint and has undergone surgery to repair
the break and stabilize her hip. There is a possibility that additional
surgery will be needed on her hip and with continued care needed, her medical
bills are climbing. It’s only through the kindness and generosity of our NASPR
angels that we can help with such extensive medical care. Phoebe has a
wonderful life ahead of her. Together, we can help Phoebe heal, give her back
her puppyhood and help her find a forever family.
CHARLIE

Handsome,
healthy and happy are but a few of his wonderful traits. Charlei is a big guy
weighing in at 63 lbs. of solid muscle that is balanced with an equal amount of
gentle nature. He loves people, especially children, and is looking for a new
family to call his own. He spends a lot of time entertaining himself. He is not
a dog that will be bored if you are not entertaining him. He has made an area in
his run that he stores his toys in (we call it his man cave!) He spends many
hours chewing on his bones, and enjoying his outside porch at the shelter. He
enjoys people, but he's independent and has no problem finding fun things to do
on his own. He walks great on a lead, rides well in a car, and listens well to
commands. He is @ 5 years old, HW negative, up to date on vaccinations, neutered
and ready for adoption.
