STOP PUPPY MILLS
What is a puppy mill?
It is a place full of sorrow
Where all the sad faces|
Dread another tomorrow.
The young and the old
The sick and the lame
None are safe
In this money making game
And who are these humans
That subject them to squalor
To pain and disease
To make another dollar
The lucky ones make it out
They have managed to survive
To end up in pet shops
Most barely alive
They stare at you
With eyes that cry
Would someone please tell me,
Why oh why.
Don't pass by that cage
But look hard and long
Then tell the store owner
That this is terribly wrong
These creatures we love
Don't deserve such a plight
Stand up for the helpless
Help them win their fight
Critter Haven's a good start
Visit and see why
Nothing is gained
Unless you try

Most pet shops get the pups
they sell from these places.

Say no to puppy mills
Most of us
have heard about puppy mills. We can all help in the fight against them -
without leaving our desks.
The single most important action you can take is simple. Do not buy puppies from
retail stores. Tell your friends not to buy puppies from retail stores.
How much is that doggie in
the Window
Or
(How not to buy a puppy on
the Internet)
By Maggie Hays
So you’re looking for a puppy?
You jump on the Internet and hit your
favorite search engine, type in "puppy" or what ever specific breed
you’re looking for and voila! Look at all those URL’s! Pages and pages of on
-line breeders and pet stores appear on your screen.
Yes,
I said pet stores. You too can pick out and purchase with credit card in hand
"a puppy" or for that
matter
a hairbrush, new curtains or drain cleaner. An example of this is
www.orderpuppy.com
It’s set up like any other merchandise site on the web. You can pick out the
breed of dog, gender And how many
of them you would like, add it to your cart and away you go. You
never get to actually see what that puppy looks like or if it’s friendly and
healthy. You don’t get to meet his/her parents to see if they are healthy or
being treated well and to top it off you pay top dollar for a puppy of
questionable quality with a pretty limited guaranty. You’re
essentially paying the same price, that you would for a top quality show
prospect puppy from a reputable breeder. (One) A breeder that screens the
parents for genetic defects before carefully planning the breeding that would
produce the best quality healthy puppies. A breeder that would be there to
answer any questions or help with any problems you might have. A person that
would also be there to help that puppy if, for some reason in its lifetime you
could no longer keep him/her. You
might say "Well, these puppies come from breeders don’t they?" Reputable breeders would never sell one of
their well planned much loved puppies to complete
strangers. In fact the by laws of almost all national breed clubs state that a breeder will never sell their puppies in or to
a pet shop or puppy mill. Good
breeders aren’t just careful about how they breed their dogs, they
are very careful about who buys and takes home their puppies too. They want to
make sure that the new owners will
love and take proper care of them. That those owners won’t say later "Oh, it got bigger than I expected"
or "It’s just too much work to train him". They will try and find out what kind of people and what kind of
dog owners you are. They want to make sure you
will love and take good care of that dog for the rest of it’s life. J
So when you see that cute little "puppy in the Windows" don’t just
grab your credit card Use your
search engine wisely. Research the different breeds to find out what’s best
for you and your prospective new
companion, then find a good breed rescue or reputable breeder to adopt your new
four legged friend from.
BEAR IN MIND that AKC registration does NOT guarantee
quality. NASPR stands firm in
the opinion that Shar-Pei should ONLY be purchased from breeders who belong to
the CSPCA, who offer a written contract, names and numbers of others who
have purchased dogs from them, who screen their dogs for health defects and
who promise to take
the dog back if you are ever unable to keep it.
NEVER BUY A SHAR-PEI FROM
A PET STORE.
The registration papers are only as good
as the breeder.
IF you buy a puppy
DEAL WITH A CSPCA MEMBER BREEDER WHO YOU
TRUST.
